BRUISES
by Hannah Martin
Bruises is about grief, girlhood, rage, responsibility and care. Set in modern day South London, the play follows the journey of 16 year old Ava. Ava is in a different situation to most other teens her age, her mother has early onset dementia. As she grapples with the concept of responsibility and becomes carer for her mum and brother, Bruises highlights the conflict and pressures of being a young person in this position. When Ava struggles to balance her life, relationships, and regular council meetings, the moral question of assisted dying is raised, pushing Ava to confront the boundaries of care and the weight of choices far beyond her years.
