Mary Seacole by Heather Agyepong

A self-portrait displayed on our wall!

Mary Seacole was a nurse who set up the 'British Hotel' behind the lines of the Crimean War. She was voted the greatest black Briton in 2004

In this self-portrait, Agyepong explores a lesser-known side of Mary Seacole's life, referencing the nurse's use of herbal medicine.

LDN WMN is a series of free public artworks across London created by women and non-binary artists inspired by unsung women from the city's history.

It is a collaboration between City Hall and Tate Collective. It is part of Mayor Sadiq Khan's #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign which marks 100 years since the first women won the right to vote in the UK.
