Produced, written and presented by Harrison Cranfield
A bold, heartfelt and hilariously British new musical set in 1987.
In Her Defence, an original British musical comedy written by Harrison Cranfield, will make its debut at Camden Fringe this August. Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1987, the production follows Donna, a fiery single mother whose life is turned upside down when she discovers her husband’s affair, only to find herself caught in the middle of a chaotic custody battle.
As gossip spreads through her close-knit neighbourhood faster than the morning post, Donna must navigate solicitors, awkward encounters, unexpected allies and the challenge of rebuilding her life while protecting the people she loves most. Alongside a sharp-tongued best friend and a very questionable postman, Donna discovers that finding her voice may be the most important battle of all.
Blending laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional warmth, In Her Defence captures the spirit of 1980s Britain through colourful characters, sharp dialogue and an original score full of wit and heart. The musical explores themes of resilience, friendship, family and standing up for yourself when the world expects you to stay silent.
Speaking about the production, writer Harrison Cranfield said:
“I wanted to create a musical that feels unmistakably British: funny, heartfelt and rooted in characters audiences can recognise and connect with. At its core, In Her Defence is about finding strength in difficult circumstances and discovering that your voice matters, even when everything around you is trying to drown it out.”
Packed with memorable musical numbers, eccentric personalities and plenty of 1980s charm, In Her Defence promises a lively and entertaining theatrical experience. The show combines the energy of a classic British comedy with the emotional depth of a story about self-discovery and resilience, offering audiences both laughter and heart.
The production is particularly suited to audiences who enjoy original British musical theatre, character-led comedy and stories that celebrate strong female voices. Its blend of humour, warmth and recognisable social dynamics makes it an appealing addition to the Camden Fringe programme.
