The Lure of Class
Join the team behind the independent investigative newspaper Byline Times for an evening of stimulating discussion to help us understand the times we’re living through – and how we got here. Hear different perspectives from those on the inside track, ask questions, and be a part of the debate.
The Lure of Class on Monday November 10th asks: Why and how does class hold such an insidious grip on Britain?
For centuries, class has been one of Britain’s defining, if often ignored, social forces – shaping our politics, our media, and our sense of self. Even as gig work replaces industry and global markets eclipse aristocratic estates, class remains woven into Britain’s fabric. What is it about Britain’s enduring temptation toward hierarchy – our fascination with rank, privilege, and deference – that keeps questions of class so thoroughly embedded in our national life?
Why has class always been such a powerful, if elusive, organising principle in Britain – one that adapts as work, wealth, and party loyalties change, yet never disappears? How does it still permeate today’s political scandals, cultural divides, and media narratives? And what does its persistence reveal about who we are, and who we imagine ourselves to be?
Join our panel of writers, thinkers, and campaigners as they unpack the enduring lure of class in 21st-century Britain – from privilege and inequality to aspiration and alienation. Expect rigorous debate, original insight, and an evening that challenges assumptions and sparks new questions about where Britain is today, and where it’s headed.
Featuring your hosts, Byline Times Editor-in-Chief Hardeep Matharu and Co-Founder Peter Jukes, as well as:
