JUST STOP!
by Leonie Watkins

In this one-act play, we meet Adam, father of one of the Just Stop Oil activists found guilty of causing disruption by bringing the M25 to a standstill in November, 2022. Adam is a man grappling with a storm of confusion, anger, and bitterness in the wake of the arrests. He is faced with the challenging reality of his child’s choices and the decisions made by others involved that day. In the aftermath of these events and amid a fervent national response, Adam immerses himself in the flow of media coverage. His perspective shifts dramatically when he experiences intense public animosity and hostility directed towards him. As time passes, Adam begins to unravel the intentions of the protestors. Through letters written by his child in prison, Adam rediscovers their deep connection and re-evaluates the events with newfound clarity and compassion.

Just Stop Oil was one of the most well-known, yet largely criticised activist groups in the UK. They have been called fanatics and selfish, with one former police inspector labelling them as an “evil cult.” Climate change is an urgent issue that continues to divide public opinion. Although the majority of Britons support progress, the debate threatens to further disunify our political parties, galvanising those who advocate for action, while alienating those who adopt a delay/denial stance. The play explores the often uncomfortable relationship between politics and our essential democratic right to protest in order to motivate support for change.
