Music: Robert Reid Allan

A Small Group of People is a new documentary music theatre work by composer-pianist Bob Allan which investigates the experiences of musicians who have been arrested and imprisoned as a result of civil disobedience and non-violent protest. In a time of late stage capitalism, genocide and climate crisis, we hear directly from the people who have taken matters into their own hands, as they explore the meaning of action, sacrifice and music-making in the face of draconian clampdowns on protest and free speech.

The piece asks: what more can and should we, as musicians, be doing? How much are we willing to sacrifice for the change we want to see? Can we justify pursuing music despite the injustice we see around us? This is a work-in-progress sharing of initial ideas.
