Course description

Discover the possibilities  of multilingual theatre in this dynamic workshop! Through fun, practical exercises, you'll explore how to use voice, movement, and multiple languages to create compelling theatrical scenes. Open to theatre makers who speak any language(s) - including just English.

Who could benefit from this course?

This workshop is perfect for theatre practitioners, actors, directors, and creatives who are curious about multilingual storytelling and want to experiment with how language can enhance theatrical experiences, bring new meaning to existing texts, and highlight cultural identities. Whether you are looking to expand your creative toolkit, collaborate in a diverse linguistic environment, or explore how performance transcends verbal communication, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of how language and theatre intersect.

How does it work?

The course combines warm-ups, improvisation games, and collaborative exercises to build confidence and creativity. Participants will devise their own short performances using a mix of languages, exploring how tone, gestures, and context convey meaning and character.

What do you gain?

  • Develop practical physical and vocal techniques.
  • Boost creativity and confidence in expressing yourself through performance.
  • Gain new perspectives on communication across languages.
  • Collaborate with a diverse group of creatives.

What do multilingual actors have to say about the experience of performing in different languages? Three artists from the 2024 Voila! Theatre Festival discussed their ideas in a guest blog for Broadway World.
