SAMMY AT 66

A Reading.

A rare opportunity to rediscover this almost forgotten script, SAMMY, only the second ever performance in over sixty years.

SAMMY was originally written and directed by a true British Auteur, Ken Hughes. This one man TV play catapulted child actor Anthony Newley into the limelight as a serious performer, and on to stardom.

The 40 minute screenplay was broadcast live on the BBC on 26th March 1958.

Hughes was awarded Screenwriter Of The Year for this script. Later he won an Emmy when it was adapted for American TV as ‘Eddie’. In the States, the lead role was played by Mickey Rooney, who also won an Emmy for his performance.

Based on the success of his hugely influential script, Ken Hughes developed it into the movie, The Small World Of Sammy Lee. Set six decades ago in Soho, the film captured the square mile precisely as it was evolving into the hotbed of cool we know it as today.

Join Corker Productions for the opportunity to revisit a legend of Soho, at the very moment this area became the cultural melting pot in the heart of London - the birthplace of every interesting and important artistic movement in Britain today.
