Byron Wallen's Hurricane Bells
Wonky Logic [solo]
Donovan Haffner [EMERGENCE]

BYRON WALLEN @byron_wallen

Back in 2019 Filthy Lucre commissioned Byron to write music for 8 musicians responding to Peter Shenai’s "Hurricane Bells" . Peter is a contemporary artist who has cast 5 bells modelled on the structure of Hurricane Katrina— the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005. These cyclonic, irregularly shaped bells produce a tonally complex web of sounds reminiscent of Chinese bells and gongs.

"Gong instruments in general, have this amazing political and communicative power: they memorialize, they mark celebrations, they sound alarms, they call communities to gather around important issues. These bells based on the structure of Hurricane Katrina carry a powerful message and set of meanings with them.  My piece is an exploration of  the socio-political economic climate where their sound resonates. The reason "Hurricane Katrina" incurred such a huge loss of life and destruction was not because of the winds, but because of the subsequent flooding, due to insufficient levy infrastructure and the pathetic response of the US federal government."

WONKY LOGIC [solo] - @wonky_logic

Wonky Logic started to make beats at the age of 11 on his mum's computer. He went onto briefly attend Leeds College of Music where he developed his jazz musicianship. Now London based, in 2015 he became a founding member and bass player of the band Steam Down, making significant waves in the UK Jazz scene. He has toured extensively with many projects and collaborations in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia with artists such as Nightmares On Wax, Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross, Wiyaala, Afla Sakey and K.O.G. He also connected with veteran producer I.G Culture (Co-op) after playing keyboard for a show for I.G's collective "Selectors Assemble". They have since collaborated on an album called ‘Earthbound’ by LSCM, Dwayne being the musical director. Dwayne’s current writing and producing projects include Sons Of Kemet, alongside Nache aka Edward Hick, The General Elation Soundsystem alongside Brother Portrait and Nadeem Din-Gabisi.
