MY NIGHT WITH GEORGE
by Juliette Brady Quenin for Black Cat White Paws Theatre Company
63-year-old George, lives in a council flat in Ladbroke Grove and does various odd jobs to make ends meet. The apple of George’s eye is his daughter Gerry, who visits him a couple of times a year from Paris. George still sees her as his little girl who loves nothing more than picnics in Holland Park or a blockbuster at the local cinema. But Gerry is turning 18 and she now swears by influencers preaching about money and prestige as being the supreme answer to all existential problems. To her, George is irrevocably a loser and a negative influence, and she is determined to cut what she sees as her last mandatory visit short. Through a couple of unexpected interventions, revealing a past and a present carefully hidden by George, Gerry will see that there is much more to her father than the sum of his parts.
My Night with George talks about the generational gap, and the power of honest communication in bridging it. The play is also a tribute to the Punk movement and its legacy, asking the question: Was the famous “No Future!” slogan of the punk generation a self-fulfilling prophecy for its key players?
